Frequently Asked Questions

How can I understand what I read if I don't already speak the language?

By allowing users to look up any word or phrases in multiple reference sources (dictionaries, images, Wikipedia, translations, & pronunciation audios), LingoDream helps you understand what you read and reduce the frustration associated with learning a foreign language.

What should I read?

Definitely not textbooks! Read anything that actually interests you! For example, if you like cooking, you should read about cooking tutorials and recipes in your target language. With the help of LingoDream, you will be able to understand most of what you read.

How can I understand 100% of what I read?

In the early stages, you shouldn't try to understand everything you read. It's totally OK to understand 80% and move on! In fact, getting bogged down in grammatical nuances at an early stage can result in overwhelming frustration and reduce your motivation. As you read more in the target language, your brain will gradually pick up those nuances without you noticing!

When should I ditch my native language and go full immersion?

We recommend you gradually shift from a bilingual setup (with the translation feature & bilingual dictionaries) to a monolingual and immersive environment. As you become increasingly comfortable reading in the target language, you should try to think in this language directly and avoid mentally translating phrases into and from your native language.

How should I memorise vocabulary?

We do not recommend rote memorisation. By reading interesting materials, you will rapidly expand your vocabulary. Moreover, LingoDream automatically records every word you look up and makes smart vocabulary flash cards just for you! It also reminds you to recall your flash cards according to Ebbinghaus's Forgetting Curve.

What about speaking skills?

Research on Comprehensible Input suggests that reading can not only expand your vocabulary but also boost your understanding of the grammar. Consequently, your speaking skills will also improve with more and more reading.

How can I keep myself motivated?

Public Commitment is a powerful motivator! LingoDream tracks your learning progress with beautiful charts and a calendar on your profile page. You can share your profile page with your friends and family on social media.

How long does it take to become fluent in a language?

This is a difficult question to answer. It depends on what you mean by fluent and what language you are learning. With the right mindset, tools, materials, methods, and daily dedication, it's possible to beat the average and archieve reasonable fluency in a few months.

For best experience, we recommend using the latest desktop version of Chrome browser. We officially support the latest desktop versions of Chrome, Firefox, & Safari.

How long should I study every day?

We encourage at least one hour of reading each day. The key is to fit language learning into your daily routine. If you can do it every day, the power of habit will ensure your success!

If you are having a busy day, try reading only one article or review 5 flash cards just to keep the habit alive.
